London, September 2026: On select Sundays this autumn. Hotel Indigo London Clerkenwell will be delving into the history of their neighbourhood with a series of engaging talks and walking tours, alongside a packed weekly line up of drinks, great food and entertainment.
Kicking things off on 6 September is Historic Clerkenwell: London’s Secret “Village”, as Diane Burstein (one of London’s best known and most versatile Blue Badge Tour Guides) will be unveiling the stories behind one of central London’s most characterful neighbourhoods. Discover the Clerk’s Well which gave the area its name, the gateway to an ancient monastery, a church with a 12th century crypt, the site of an underground prison, an unusual library and an 18th century courthouse…
On 27 September, head over for Smithfield: Guts & Glory, a walking tour through the colourful – and occasionally gruesome - history of London’s historic meat market. For hundreds of years on The City’s ‘smooth fields’, people died for what they believed in. Join Katie Wignall of Look Up London for a walk through the back alleys and hidden paths of Smithfield and Clerkenwell in search of these martyrs and rebels. On the way you’ll be looking up to spot the area’s hidden history, finding plague pits, forgotten pubs and hearing dramatic tales!
Architecture fans will revel in It’s Going to be Brutal on 4 October, exploring some of London’s most striking and divisive Brutalist buildings, with Eleanor Jackson. One of the most contentious and debated styles of design, Brutalist buildings abound in this part of the capital with its dramatic concrete forms, rough textures and monumental shapes.
Rounding off the series on 18 October, A Brave New World: From the Second World War to the Swinging Sixties charts the extraordinary changes that transformed London from the post-war years into the swinging sixties, with Russell Nash.
For those looking to make a day of it, the Hotel’s Victorian pub – the Hat & Feathers serve an outstanding Sunday Roast for £25 – book a table, or pop in during the week to enjoy the Hotel’s busy weekly events, from the Sabini Martini Hour and Wine Wednesday, through to the regular Tuesday Quiz Night and Jazz in the Sabini Bar on a Friday.
With its mix of engaging local history, architecture, music, cocktails and entertainment, the new programme hopes to expand our knowledge about this intriguing part of the capital, and give locals and guests alike a reason to explore, eat, drink and stay awhile.
