Spring arrives in Cornwall

Cornwall, 27 February 2023:  Springtime has officially arrived in Cornwall as the champion Magnolia trees of the six gardens have all  reached the magic number of 50 blooms each.

Cornwall is heralded by the delightful candy-coloured explosions of colour with the blossoms of Magnolias across six of the champion trees of The Great Gardens of Cornwall bursting into life, with head gardeners across the gardens checking them daily. Originally founded by Toby Ashworth of The Nare Hotel in collaboration with The Great Gardens, the ‘bloomometer’ score is announced daily until the first garden reaches the magic number of 50 and spring is declared.

Jaimie Parsons, Head Gardener at Caerhays Castle, said “ The magnolias this year are spectacular, after what feels like a long cold winter we are delighted that all the champion magnolia campbellii  trees in the Great Gardens are in full bloom and we are finally able to announce spring has arrived…..in Cornwall at least! It’s a great feeling! "

The Great Gardens of Cornwall is a collection of 13 of the best-known, largest, most historically and horticulturally important gardens in Cornwall. Spread across Cornwall, from a tidal estuary on the River Tamar, to the tip of the Isles of Scilly, the 13 gardens include: Antony Woodland Gardens, Bonython Estate Gardens, Caerhays Castle Spring Gardens, the Eden Project, Lamorran Gardens, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Trebah Garden, Tregothnan, Tregrehan Garden, Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, Tresco Abbey Garden, Trewidden and Trewithen.
